Louisiana Festivals: Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler

By: Gigi Welsh

Louisiana hosts more than 400 festivals a year

"Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!"  "Let the Good Times Roll!"  In Louisiana, "joie de vivre" - the joy of life - is expressed in many ways.  The simplicity of celebrating what truly brings joy into one's life is priceless.  If you ask any person in Cajun country what they are truly grateful for, an abundance of people will say family, friends, and food.  There is no better way to celebrate this than with local festivals.

Most people know about Louisiana's Mardi Gras festivals.  These are held in multiple towns and cities throughout the state. However, Louisiana hosts more than 400 festivals a year.  Nearly each town or city celebrates their local accomplishments, culture, livelihood, resources, or food.  If they appreciate it, they will celebrate it.  What a way to live!  True happiness can be built when we learn to appreciate the beautiful things around us.

My hometown is Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.  We are the "Crawfish Capital of the World."  Growing up in this close-knit town with generations of Cajun and Creole people was like living in another world.  This, I did not realize until I became an adult.  The world around me was all that I knew.  Joy, celebration, dancing, and, of course, eating out of this world food is a way of life.  Whether life brought dips in our paths or not, the vibrations of brighter days were never far ahead of us.

Small town after small town, festivals reign once or more a year.  My mother's  small hometown, The Village of Parks, Louisiana hosts a cracklin cookoff.  Cracklins, referred to locally as 'gratons' are bite-sized fried pork skin and fat seasoned with Cajun seasoning.  They are a coveted treat in many parts of Louisiana.  Neighboring towns have gumbo, catfish, frog, sugarcane, strawberry, rice, cattle, and other festivals. There is even a Rougarou Fest; a folklore "Cajun Bigfoot", if you will, in Houma, Louisiana. The flavorful tastes of Louisiana can be found at any of the 400 festivals scattered throughout the state.

If you have never been to a festival in Louisiana, I can assure you that there is a festival in a charming town suited just for you!  "Explore Louisiana" has information on festivals, things to do, and places to stay to help you plan your good times.  Don't miss out on experiencing what awaits you. Louisiana will awaken your soul.  Start searching here: https://www.explorelouisiana.com/festivals-events-louisiana
